For Mother’s Day, every year since Nolan moved to Pennsylvania, Toni has “requested” (demanded? Guilted? ) that Nolan and his girlfriend Alexis come back to Colorado to visit their mom’s- Toni, and Wendy. On this particular visit, Toni decided both Mom’s and their whole families should get together to do Karaoke. Byron, who’s entire “theater career” only included one musical, where the musical director cried and quit, almost never sings in public, unless it’s for a joke. Toni, however, sounds like Mariah Carey– according to, well.. Toni. Wendy has proven herself to know many popular lyrics and rap songs from memory, so we held out hope for her. Kyra has great pitch and sings, but, as far as we know, only for herself. Regardless, plans were made, people paid, Karaoke, must be done.
Apparently, Karaoke is very popular in the Denver Korean culture, and our chosen Karaoke venue turned out to be very Korean. Figuring out how to even turn the TV on, and select the karaoke input required using our phone’s google translate to navigate Korean menus. After 10 minutes of far too many opinions, the front desk arrived to set things right. Now, library online, the gang was all set to sing some of their favorites, with the majority of parents selecting music from the 80’s, and most of the kids laughing at our “oldies,” and picking their own “songs,” if that new fangled music they listen to can be called music, which we’d argue it can not.
Music in hand, some costuming in place, (Toni dressed as Madonna, Byron as an aging, slightly overweight, 80’s hair band rocker) gave the singing their best. Unfortunately, all our video footage of the actual singing burned in a sudden and unfortunate phone fire.
